DownloadApril 9, 2025 - A powerful coalition of California’s leading civic and philanthropic institutions filed an administrative petition this morning urging Attorney General Rob Bonta to intervene in OpenAI’s for-profit conversion to protect the up to $300 billion in charitable assets OpenAI holds as a nonprofit for the public good.
“As impressive as the individual members of OpenAI’s advisory commission are, the commission itself appears to be a calculated distraction from the core problem: OpenAI misappropriating its nonprofit assets for private gain,” said Orson Aguilar, the CEO and founding president of LatinoProsperity.
“This is a kind of unprecedented conversion in terms of its size and we just want to make sure that the attorney general really exercises his powers to protect those charitable assets,” said Orson Aguilar, chief executive and founding president of LatinoProsperity.
“There’s been a lot of conversations between the attorney general and attorneys at OpenAI,” Aguilar said. “We believe that, since this is unprecedented, just the nature of the assets alone, that this needs to be a little more transparent and public.”
"More than 50 California labor and nonprofit organizations are asking Attorney General Rob Bonta to make sure OpenAI properly accounts for the public good as it seeks to transition from a nonprofit to a for-profit company."
“This isn’t about trying to stop the conversion of nonprofit to for-profit,” Fred Blackwell, the CEO of the San Francisco Foundation, told California Decoded. “It’s really purely about making sure the assets that were accumulated for the public good stay that way.”
"A group of organizations, including nonprofits like LatinoProsperity and labor groups like the California Teamsters, are petitioning California Attorney General Rob Bonta to stop OpenAI from becoming a for-profit entity, The Los Angeles Times reports. OpenAI announced plans to transition to a public-benefit corporation in 2024, and reportedly has two years to pull it off or risk a large portion of the money its raised become debt."
